Tim Cahill seals Millwall return after 14 years
Championship outfit Millwall have reportedly re-signed Australian international Tim Cahill on a short-term deal for the season. The 38-year-old left Melbourne City last month and he will now be aiming to prepare for the summer World Cup with a short stint in English football.
Cahill netted 57 goals during his previous spell between 1997 and 2004, and he is delighted to rejoin the south London outfit, who are now coached by ex-teammate Neil Harris with whom he won the third-tier title back in the 2000/01 season.
He said: "It's an amazing feeling. To finally come home and to join Neil Harris, David Livermore and all the lads will be really special. I can't wait to greet the fans, meet my new team-mates - it's one of those things where it's meant to be.
The romance of the story is definitely not lost on me. I've always said that if I came back to England, I'd come home. Millwall is where I learnt my trade and it was the most important learning period of my life - my apprenticeship in understanding football."
Cahill spent eight years with Everton after his exit from Millwall in 2004, and he has since had spells with the likes of New York Red Bulls, Shanghai Shenhua and Hangzhou Greentown before making his return to the Championship outfit.
Despite his trailing age, Cahill remains fundamental to Australia's plans for the World Cup, where they face a difficult challenge versus the likes of France, Peru and Denmark in Group C. The veteran netted twice for the Socceroos in the World Cup play-off victory over Syria in October 2017, and this has taken his goal-tally to 50 goals in 104 caps.
Millwall are presently nine points off the relegation zone thanks to their strong home record this term, and they will be looking to make the most of Cahill's experience to secure their Championship status, which should be the minimal expectation as of now.
