Tim Cahill Says World Cup Qualification Is Essential for Australian Football
Australia’s icon Tim Cahill claims that it is imperative for the national team to reach the World Cup 2018, as it is a factor that helps improve the overall quality of the Australian football.
Since the Australian A-League and other divisions of the country are not immensely popular, the national team arrives on qualifying for the World Cup in order to bring limelight to the country’s football. The Melbourne City striker is regarded as one of the greatest ever Australian soccer players, and he has been able to carry on playing even at the age of 37. Last season, he made 22 appearances for the Melbourne City in the Australian A-League and came up with 11 goals.
It is expected that Tim Cahill will be part of the Australian squad if they reach the World Cup. In such an instance, Cahill would be playing in his fourth World Cup. By doing so, he will be able to surpass the achievement of Mark Milligan, who is among the only latest player to have appeared in three major tournaments. Even thoughMilligan has featured in more games for Australia,
Tim Cahill is regarded as one of the best ever for Australia. If Cahill also manages to score at the World Cup 2018, he would join the illustrious band of players – Pele, Miroslav Klose, and Uwe Seeler – to have featured and scored in four World Cups.
“This is what we live for. As a nation there's a lot riding on it, purely because of the momentum of where the game is at. This is the biggest foundation we can build off and regardless of what everyone says, it will affect football in Australia if we don't qualify. You always see a spike in numbers and participation (after qualification), even afterwards, and (the) excitement (it brings),” said Cahill.
