Tim Cahill may return to Australian A-League
Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill says that a potential return to the Australian A-League will depend on FFA CEO David Gallop.
He has certainly put the ball in the court of the CEO, who was involved in a public war with the midfielder following his criticism of the Australian A-League. Cahill grabbed first the league for having made enough progress in the last few years. He says that the league has failed to attract the best players in the world – even when they have aged – partially because of the reluctance to pay big money.
In contrast, leagues like the MLS and even the Brazilian league have grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years. The A-league, meanwhile, has a relatively low concentration of big-name players. The likes of Alessandro del Piero and Cahill have featured in the league over the past few years. Cahill, though, has been placing a lot more emphasis on Chinese football, where he has spent the last few months. It looks like the set to stay with the Chinese clubs for the time being. However, he has not ruled out a potential return to his home country in order to finish his playing days. At 36 years of age, Cahill is fast approaching the end of his career.
“I’ve never closed the door on the A-League. I’m very close with the A-League chairmen, very close with the league. But I can’t press the button on anything ... A lot of things are up in the air here but I’ve just got to keep playing. That’s the main thing — to see what happens for me. Whether I stay in China or go somewhere else in the world but I think it’s going to be left to the big boss man of the league to decide what he wants to do,” said Cahill.
