Tim Cahill left New York Red Bulls
Earlier in February, it was revealed that Tim Cahill had left the New York Red Bulls by a mutual agreement but it didn’t take the 35 year old Australian attacker a long time before going off and finding another club to join as Cahill landed a deal with the Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.
The 35-year-old said: "I've done the Premier League, I've done America. New York was amazing for me. China is a growing market in football. I'm at an age where I want to give something back to football and still play at a high level. I think it's exciting. To still be in demand and have the offers I've had is special but this will be massive for me as a player on and off the park."
It’s believed that Tim Cahill had rejected offers arriving from England, the Middle East and even Spain before he opted to make a switch to Shanghai Shenhua in China. When the deal was made official, Cahill stated that he had consulted with his former manager David Moyes and ex-teammate Thierry Henry before deciding on accepting the deal from the Chinese outfit.
Tim Cahill used social media to express what it means for him to join Shanghai Shenhua as the Australian player wrote on his twitter account: ‘’Massive Thank to the Shanghai Shenhua Fans this is something I will never forget. My new home.My first session today. Love the training facilities.’’
The first match of the season for Shanghai will be played against their rivals Shenxin on March 8 and Tim Cahill is getting ready to play his first match in the Chinese Super League.
The New York Red Bulls released Cahill on a mutual agreement with the player even though Cahill still had one year remaining on his contract and this has allowed Shanghai on signing the Australian player on an initial one year long deal where he could be earning up to $10 million depending on a number of factors including the amount of goals scored, his performances and if whether or not the Chinese side is able on securing major titles in this season with the help of their recent signing.
