TIM CAHILL APOLOGIZES FOR HIS RED CARD OFFENCE
Tim Cahill was sent off in the Melbourne Derby last week but the Australian has come out to apologize for his actions.
The former Everton forward who plays for Melbourne City was about to start the game from the bench during the derby but his comments to the referee earned him a red card even before making it onto the pitch.
“I sincerely apologize to [referee] Chris Beath for my reaction. My behaviour also hurt the game so I also apologize to my team, to Melbourne Victory and to all the fans at the game and watching at home.
“Regardless of whatever happens on the pitch, I have to respect the game and the officials. I want the game to grow in Australia and I want to do all I can to help that happen. No matter the situation, I have to set an example and be accountable for my words and actions,” the player apologized through Instagram on Monday.
The all time record goalscorer for his country was angry at Melbourne Victory’s controversial goal. Victory scored twice in two minutes to go 2-1. City reacted poorly after Manny Muscat own goal which was ruled offside briefly was allowed to stand.
City would now play the next A-League game without six players who have been suspended. Goalkeepr Dean Bouzanis is likely to join the suspended players as he faces a racist slur against Victory’s Besart Berisha. The camera caught him twice calling the Albanian striker a “gypsy.”
After the game and when tempers calmed, Melbourne City issued a formal apology to Berisha and Melbourne Victory. Bouzanis apologized in his personal capacity as well but would face punishment for his actions.
