RYAN BENCHED FOR VIGO WIN
Australia national team shot stopper Mat Ryan was left on the substitutes’ bench for the entire game as his Real Sociedad see off Celta Vigo at home to get back to winning ways in the Spanish La Liga and boost their hopes of qualifying for Champions League football at the end of this season.
Alex Remiro has been picked in the Real Sociedad goal ahead of Australia international Mat Ryan consistently this season and the status quo was maintained for the visit of Celta Vigo in La Liga. Till date, Australia goalkeeper Ryan has played four times for Real Sociedad in all competitions this season. He has featured for the club three times in the league plus once in the Europa League in his first season at the club following his arrival last summer. The Australian had spent the second half of last season at Arsenal after losing his place to Spanish shot stopper Robert Sanchez at the start of last season.
Ryan was on the bench throughout the Celta Vigo game which ended in a 1-0 win for Real Sociedad. The only goal of the match was scored by Spanish international attacker Mikel Oyarzabal in the 13th minute.
The win ensured that Real Sociedad got back to winning ways for the first time in seven La Liga games. Their last win was a 2-0 away win over Osasuna in Pamplona on November 7. They had gone six games without a win in the league before they tasted victory against Celta Vigo at the weekend.
They started the weekend in sixth place on the La Liga standings but they were able to leapfrog Barcelona into fifth place with the win over Celta Vigo. On their part, Barcelona could only play a 1-1 draw after conceding an 89th minute equaliser to Granada thanks to the goal from Antonio Puertas.
