Mornington 1 - 1 Dandenong Sparrows
On a cold and drizzly day Mornington faced off against old foes Dandenong Sparrows in what turned out to be a lacklustre affair.
From the kick-off it was clear that no team was willing to give an inch with a number of big tackles coming in from both sides.
Dandenong then took the lead when a Watson clearance was intercepted leaving Sparrows with the easiest of chances that Chinien slotted away.
Fans could have been mistaken for a sense of de ja vu although this time it was at Mornington’s end when Bill intercepted a Sparrows clearance only to see their keeper make a magnificent diving save.
The half petered out with the only real highlight being a half chance that fell to a turning Dave who couldn’t get enough power on his shot to trouble the keeper.
Both teams came out unchanged in the second half and for half and hour both goals were rarely threatened.
A darting Brophy run through the box and a clever ball to Dave nearly opened up the Sparrow defence although once again the shot was weak.
With defeat looking ominous teWierik controlled a clearing ball and was felled on the edge of the area giving Mornington a glimmer of hope.
Brophy stepped up and expertly curled his ball around the wall and past the diving Sparrow’s keeper to even the ledger.
This goal spurred Mornington into life as they looked to find the winner however this wasn’t to be as Dandenong hung on grimly for a 1-1 draw.
This Saturday Mornington host ladder leaders Ashburton at home.
