CAHILL NOT WORRIED
New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill has said that he was not worried about the lack of goals after arriving at the MLS club as one of the designated players.
Each club is allowed only two designated players and Cahill is one of them. Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is the other designated player for New York Red Bulls. Cahill has gone through almost 20 matches without a goal, but he has said that the lack of regular goalscoring is not affecting him.
Cahill has said that this is not the first time he has been experiencing a goal drought. He has quoted a similar experience during his time at Everton. Even though he was not finding the back of the net regularly, Everton managed to finish in the top four positions. Thus, finding the back of the net is not an important factor for Cahill as long as he plays well for the team. New York manager Mike Petke has also backed his claims by saying that he did not expect Cahill to be on the scoresheet regularly. Instead, he was happy with the performances of the midfielder in other areas of the pitch.
Cahill is one of the highest earning MLS players at more than $ 3 million per year.
“I played 42 games [that season] and we finished top seven or six. I was a big part of that team. I played a different role and it isn’t always about scoring. Throughout my career I’ve scored important goals, a lot of winners and game changers. At the start of [this] season, I had chances that weren’t going in and it doesn’t faze me. I actually feel that I probably played better at the start of the season than in some of the games where I scored goals but it doesn’t matter," said Cahill.
