AUSTRALIA MAINTAIN GROUP B TOP SPOT
The Asian qualifiers for the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar is in the third round with ten teams battling for four automatic spots, while a fifth spot is only available for the inter-confederation playoffs.
Australia are in Group B alongside Japan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, China PR and Vietnam. The Australians are stillat the top of the group standings after the third round of games. They are at the summit due to a superior goal difference. Both Australia and Saudi Arabia have the maximum of nine points from three games but the former has a better goal difference.
Australia began their third round qualifiers on the Asian continent with an emphatic 3-0 home victory over China PR in September. AwerMabil, Martin Boyle and Mitchell Duke all found the back of the net during the game. Also in September, Rhyan Grant scored the only goal of the game as Australia secured a 1-0 away win over Vietnam. Grant scored the all-important goal two minutes from the halftime interval to earn all the three points for his team to maintain the perfect start to the third round qualifiers.
The Australians recorded another home victory in Group B thanks to the 3-1 win at home to Oman thereby maintaining their spot at the top of the standings. In addition to maintaining their spot at the Group B summit, Australia also continued their perfect start in the group. Just like what was obtainable with the game against China PR, Mabil, Boyle and Duke were all on target as Australia picked up the three points at stake in the game against Oman.
Mabil scored the opener inside nine minutes to give Australia a fantastic start. Rabia Al-Alawi restored parity for Oman on 28 minutes as the two teams went into the break on level terms. Boyle and Duke then scored in the second half to win the game for their team. Australia are away to Japan in Tokyo next week Tuesday for their next game in Group B.
