Barcelona’s head of international scouting admits they need defenders
AriedoBraida is the man in charge of international scouting for Barcelona and he has recently admitted in saying that the Spanish club is in need of more defenders as all of their current team of defensive players are reaching a point in their career where it’s time to consider finding younger replacements
Ever since Thomas Vermaelen joined Barcelona on August of 2014, the Belgian defender has never truly managed to make an impact with the team and even though it’s been over 1 year since this transfer was completed, things haven’t changed as Vermaelen still does not play any important role with the Spanish club.
Vermaelen has had to settle being used as a back-up option with limited playing time on certain matches. This is certainly not the way that Vermaelen wanted to spend his time in Barcelona and supporters of the Belgian player were expecting him to play a more important role with Barcelona especially after they had offloaded £15 million in luring him away from Arsenal.
DaniAlves and Jeremy Mathieu are 32 years old each, Thomas Vermaelen is 30 and Adrian along with Javier Mashceranoare 31. These are the oldest defenders in Barcelona and its because of their elevated age that AriedoBraida is thinking about adding younger defenders to the team and the defensive section of Barcelona will be the main priority during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Barcelona’s head of international scouting, AriedoBraida said: “Barcaneeds to bring in defenders because of the high age of their backline. The club currently has around five players at the back who are all over 30.’’
This kind of statement is not the thing that Thomas Vermaelen wanted to hear from a board member in Barcelona as the Belgian might be spending his last season with the Spanish club as there is a possibility of him being offloaded in this current campaign.
